Bristol Water Museum & Longshaw Seedbank

Doga Esen

Bristol Water Museum

The aim of this project is to create a sustainable educational place for visitors. With the triangular roofs and the shape of the surrounding the project fits well in this space. To bring the water concept inside the building, I placed water tubes on the south facing walls to have thermal mass. They absorb solar energy, store it, and transmit it as natural daylight. I also created interconnecting staircases at various heights and double heighted spaces to represent the change in water level.

Longshaw Seedbank

The primary focus of the facility is the landscape and ecology of the Longshaw Estate and Peak District, also include seed storage from elsewhere. The research and activity were informed and developed the sustainable use, cultivation, farming, and biodiversity of the landscape. Design decisions have been made with respect to landscape and since on a slight slope, it blends into the landscape. Using concrete tree shaped columns to follow the forest nearby, aiming to create a respectful and integrated design with the concept of the building. The shape of the building also provides visitors a gateway through landscape to reach the outdoor growing area.
