Frances Robertson

Senior Lecturer in Architecture

Frances Robertson qualified as a registered architect in 1990 having worked in large and small practices in London (Hawkins Brown, DEGW, Fitch Benoy, Holder Mathias Alcock). She graduated from Strathclyde University in 1984 with a BSc (Hons) in Architecture: a course rooted in building science and cutting edge CAD. She studied for her Diploma in Architecture at PCL (now the University of Westminster) and has a passion for the theory of architectural design and detailing tempered with pragmatism. She became a professional Architectural Technologist (MCIAT) in 2015.

Stany Babu

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Stany Babu holds MA in Architectural Design from the University of Sheffield, UK and a Bachelor in Architecture from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, India. She is a licenced architect in India and has worked in architectural firms in India and the Kingdom of Bahrain. She has worked as a lecturer at the University of Bahrain teaching first, second and third-year undergraduate students, and as a part-time teaching assistant at the University of Sheffield. She is currently pursuing her PhD at Sheffield Hallam University and is a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) assisting in courses across the programmes.

Dr Gabriel Tang

Senior Lecturer in Architecture

Gabriel Tang is an architect and Senior Lecturer in Architecture. He trained at the Bartlett, University College (UCL) London, UK, and worked in the offices of Foster + Partners, London. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, UK, on the novel use of deployable gridshells as formwork for concrete shell construction. His research interests lie in technology culture, material tectonics and the innovation synergies between architecture, structure and construction processes. He is interested in research consultancy and/ or PhD supervision.

I joined Sheffield Hallam, after twenty years in practice in landscape architecture and planning, as a senior lecturer in urban planning and design in 2007. I have been course leader for the MSc Urban Planning since 2009.

Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technology

Geoff Olner is a CAD specialist and sole principal of Architectural Images, an independent Computer Aided Design consultancy service. The office specialises in bringing the benefits of CAD to Architectural Practice using a wide spectrum of tools and media. Founded in 1994 Architectural Images was set up out of a desire to explore the full potential of computing in the architectural process.

Dr Julia Udall

Senior Lecturer in Architecture

Dr Julia Udall is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture, and leads MArch 4th Year, having joined Sheffield Hallam University in September 2016. She teaches design studios, and research in post graduate, and history and theory across undergraduate and postgraduate. She is a Director of Social Enterprise Architectural Practice Studio Polpo.

Bryan Parkin

Studio Tutor

Bryan Parkin has been a practicing architect since 1985. Bryan was an architect in a number of medium to large practices in London and Sheffield for over 20 years before co- founding his own practice in 2008. His main experience is in the design and construction of large scale commercial, education and healthcare buildings. Since a period working in the 1990’s on a series of ground breaking naturally ventilated complex buildings he has been researching low energy approaches to building, and this has been carried through into an interest in holistically sustainable design for projects ranging from small scale installations to urban districts.

Bryan has been at Sheffield Hallam University Since 2010. He is currently teaching in the 1st and 2nd year Architectural design studios.

Liz Whitehead

Studio Tutor

Elizabeth Whitehead has been a practicing architect for over 20 years. She was a senior architect in a variety of small to large practices in London and Sheffield for 15 years, co-founding her own chartered architects practice in 2008. Her main experience is in the design and construction of complex buildings, including large scale public, education, and healthcare buildings, with an emphasis on sustainable environmental design. Since undertaking the MSc in Bio-Climatic Design at Portsmouth, Elizabeth has been researching and implementing sustainable and holistic approaches to architecture, site and landscape design, and this approach underpins her practice. She is currently teaching in the 1st year Architectural design studios.

Dr Goran Vodicka

Senior Lecturer in Architecture

I am a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and the MArch course leader at Sheffield Hallam University. I teach design studios and the history and theory of architecture across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. My research is broadly focused on urban inequalities and socially-engaged design practice and education. I have been an active architectural practitioner since 2004, working in the UK and internationally. I am a Senior Associate of Architecture Sans Frontières-UK (ASF-UK) and a Board Member of Architecture Sans Frontières International (ASF-Int).

Lucy is a practicing architect with 20 years experience. The majority of her work has been in education, designing projects from small nurseries and primary schools, BSF schools, special educational needs facilities and Master planning and new faculty buildings for Higher and Further education. She has been a design tutor at Sheffield Hallam University since 2010. She is currently teaching in the 2nd and 3rd year Architectural design studios.

Dr Karam Al-Obaidi is an architectural engineer and an international researcher in Sustainable Design and Environmental Architecture. He joined Sheffield Hallam University in September 2018 as a Senior Lecturer in Architecture. He teaches on the Architecture and Architectural Technology courses.

Dr Laura Pedata

Lecturer in Environmental Architecture

Laura is an Architect and a researcher. Her past and current research and interests lie in architectural, ecological, and social sustainability. She graduated in 2005 from "La Sapienza" University in Rome, where she earned her BSc in Architecture and MArch degrees, specializing in Environmental Design. In 2007 she won a Fulbright Scholarship and attended a MArchII Program at UCLA in Los Angeles. In 2018 she earned her PhD degree in Landscape Architecture at the "International Doctorate in Architecture and Urban Planning" IDAUP XXX cycle, University of Ferrara – POLIS University.

Currently, Laura is Lecturer and responsible for the coordination of the first year BSc (Honours) Architecture at the Department of Natural & Built Environment, College of Social Sciences and Arts, SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY.

She has published several conference papers, book chapters and articles in Peer-reviewed Journals. Her latest book is entitled "From Climate to Building: Sustainable Design SCALES" (2019).

Steve Helmore

Studio Tutor

Steve Helmore is an architect who previously worked in London and Canada. After finishing his studies at the University of Sheffield he became fully qualified whilst working with BDP Sheffield. Following the completion of a new self-build house for him and his family he now runs his own practice that works across the country. Steve started tutoring at Sheffield Hallam in 2007. He is currently teaching in the 2nd and 3rd year Architectural design studios.

Neil Allen

Studio Tutor

Neil is an architect and founder director of Loop Systems Ltd. He has won numerous awards in the field of sustainable design. His particular interests include the re-use/adaptation of existing building stock (Retrofit), zero carbon approaches to the built environment, and engineered timber structures as a lower embodied energy alternative to steel or concrete. He is also a longstanding studio tutor at the Manchester School of Architecture. He is currently teaching in the 1st and 3rd year Architectural design studios at Sheffield Hallam.

Andrew Wilson

Deputy Head of Department of Natural and Built Environment

Andrew is a Chartered Architect and Architectural Technologist and Head of Architecture at Sheffield Hallam University.

Andrew has worked at Sheffield Hallam University since 2001. During that time he has played a key role if the development of all four of the Architecture courses. He has been course leader for each of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Architecture and Architectural Technology. In 2010 he took on the role of Academic Group Leader for Architecture, becoming responsible for the development of the Architecture subject area.

Professor Cristina Cerulli

Professor of Ethical Practice in Architecture and Urban Design

As a practitioner, researcher and educator in architecture and urban design, Cristina’s work focuses on supporting collective endeavours in the city and countering inequality through practices of care, actively proposing and implementing alternatives. Cristina’s research was funded by RCUK (EPSRC, AHRC), the EU and the UK Department of Health and widely shared through academic journals, parliamentary launches, public events, and exhibitions. With her practice Studio Polpo, she is contributing to the British Pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2020 (postponed2021) with an installation about the British High Street

Oli Cunningham

Principal Lecturer in Architecture & BSc (Hons) Architecture Course Leader

I am a qualified architect with extensive experience in both practice and education. I joined Sheffield Hallam University in 2016 and am the Course Leader for BSc Architecture. I also teach on the BSc Architectural Technology and MArch courses. In practice I have a wide range of experience on projects from product design, new build, listed buildings to large scale masterplanning in the residential, cultural, workplace and education sectors. The last project I completed before joining Hallam was awarded the RIBA 2017 Stirling Prize.

Dr Mohataz Hossain

Senior Lecturer in Environmental Architecture and Technology, PGRT

I am an architect, educator, RIBA sustainability expert and researcher in the field of integrated environmental design with a special focus on users’ comfort, health and well-being.

I joined Sheffield Hallam University in January 2020 as a Lecturer in Environmental Architecture and Technology and became a Senior Lecturer in January 2023. I lead and teach modules for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and apprentices. I am also Postgraduate Research Tutor (akin to the course Leader of PhD programme) of the Department of the Natural and Built Environment and Academic Adviser Lead for Architecture subject group.

My research interests include Environmental Design, Thermal Comfort, Daylighting, Workspace Design, Ventilation, Air Quality, Users’ Adaptive behaviour and well-being, Smart Technologies and Energy Simulations.

Paul King

Head of Architecture

I studied architecture at The University of Manchester, qualifying as an architect in 2000, and went on to head numerous projects at some of the UK’s most prestigious design practices in a career focused on housing, regeneration and construction.

Following qualification I joined award-winning Urban Splash, where I collaborated closely with contractors and fabricators from the site office, and went on to head the Manchester office for Urban Splash Architects while still in my 20s. This experience fuelled my interest and developed my expertise in linking design with fabrication and construction methods in architecture.

Dr Anna Wakeford Holder

Senior Lecturer in Architecture

I am a Senior Lecturer in Architecture in the Department of the Natural and Built Environment. I bring critical feminist perspectives to my work as a designer, researcher and educator, with particular interests in: • the politics and knowledge practices of built environment project commissioning, procurement, design and use; • the interactions, alliances and democratic practices of activist groups, citizens, designers and the local state to effect social and environmental change within the current and historic conditions of capitalism I am a director of the social enterprise architecture practice Studio Polpo.
