Museum of Water, Rotterdam

Architecture Studio 3B – Museum of Water (Rotterdam)

The structure is raised to prevent floods and has a social area beneath it, as well as an exhibition exhibiting the historical changes of the Maas River through a scaled water feature. The water feature is heated to produce water vapour, allowing the area to experience smell, sound, sight, and touch. The core circulation features flowing water running along the shaft's outer border, representing the building's heart. The use of shipping containers for temporary exhibitions tackles the issue of unused containers in the Port of Rotterdam while also providing space for community-based projects. The water aspects of the building, as well as its response to site constraints, produce an experience that invokes both positive and negative feelings.
