Urban Biohall

This project aims to both decarbonise the area, through use of organic materials, green space/ road redevelopment, public transport connections and sustainable energy connections, whilst also providing a series of residential and community spaces which consider the needs of local people, creating warm and welcoming environments. Residential uses are tailored to meet the needs of those in the area, including a range of housing unit sizes to support all. Community spaces are shaped as a result of proximity to Tesco and the nearby Burngreave Foodbank, with a café and community kitchen proposed, using food waste collected from these organisations.

The site occupies a key gateway to the city. Between site and the city, two dual carriageways create significant urban barriers, which prioritise cars, lack public transport connections and make it difficult for cyclists and pedestrians to commute. A redevelopment of local road network is required to overcome this, working in line with the Green Cities Strategy to propose public transport network extensions, reducing road widths, provide safe pedestrian routes and extending initiatives such as the Grey-to-Green scheme into the area.
